Ottous are genetic cross-breeds of cows and
elephants, and were developed before brontos for food
production. They were initially developed for use on
desert planets, like Rubi-Ka turned out to be, and as
such were developed in conjuction with the mutant Yuttos
to herd and keep them. However, these animals proved to
be incredibly fragile, requiring a dry to moderately
forested environment to be grown, something which the
vast majority of planets did not afford. With the
development of brontos, whose versatility, ease of
growth, and yields are unsurpasses, ottous fell by the
wayside. They appear on Rubi-Ka largely because they
were the ideal solution to early settlement needs for a
protein rich diet.
