Almost every settler will encounter a rollerrat at
some point during their careers. The familiar scream of
an attacking rollerrat is a haunting, fearsome sound at
first, but as you encounter swarms of these strange
beasts, it becomes less a threat and more of an
annoyance. Rollerrats serve little purpose in the
ecological community beyond that of a filler animal,
used in plant pollination and control for the smaller,
bushy growths. They tend to aggregate in colonies, and
are technically a genetic cross of a naked mole rat and
a hedgehog.
A special note: recently, dormant rollerrats have
begun to appear in secured buildings as defensive
mechanisms. The dormant rats will be suddenly awakened
by the opening of a door or a chest and will attack the
invaders on site. These "Frightened Rollerrats" can be a
significant and dangerous challenge to lone settlers, or
those attempting a mission in teams, so caution is
recommended.
