The sabretooths are DNA-descendants of the large sabre-toothed
cats of ancient Earth. Much like brontos, these creatures
were resurrected from extinction using long dormant
DNA and modern replication and extraction techniques.
Unlike brontos, however, the sabretooths role in the
terraforming process has little to do with food for
settlers. Rather, the sabretooths are the among the
top end predators in the terraformer food chain, used
primarily to keep populations under control and to protect
wilderness outposts. Indeed, they are frequently introduced
in the final stages of terraforming to begin population
reduction and control for more active terraformers like
gofles, blubbags, and hammers.
