Gofles are genetic crosses between the DNA of ancient Earth giraffes and elephants, and are among mankind's most ancient genetic creations. Dating back to the year 4915, Gofles have become one of the most abundant animals in the galaxy, due to their ecological versatility and use in terraforming projects for milennia.

The primary role of gofles in most terraforming scenarios is that of plant control. Typically introduced after Sylvabanes have secured local regions and allowed the growth of other, less defensive plants, Gofles are introduced (with others) as plant control, in order to prevent wild and rapid overgrowth, However, it is this that enables gofles and other animals to quickly overcome the plants, at which point predators are usually introduced, completing the basic ecosystem on a newly terraformed planet.
